PSYCHOLOGIST Sinem Gul Şahin

Sinem Gül Şahin, a Clinical Psychologist and EMDR Therapist, continues her work actively in her own clinic in Athens and offers online and face-to-face therapy support in 3 languages (Turkish, English and Greek) ​​to adults and adolescents living in Greece, Turkey and all over the world.

She was born in 1984 in Istanbul. She started her psychology bachelor’s degree at Uludağ University and won an Erasmus scholarship, and received important trainings on clinical psychology, criminal psychology, developmental psychology and psychopathology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Turin, Italy, for 6 months between 2005-2006. After returning to Turkey, she worked in Bursa City Prison as an intern psychologist for 6 months with adolescents on anger management sessions and prepared her undergraduate thesis on anger control and stigma psychology in adolescents. She made a presentation on “What is a Criminal Career” at the psychology congress held at Ege University in the same year. She completed her psychology degree with honors as the second in the department and graduated in 2007.

Immediately after her undergraduate education, she continued her master education in the field of clinical psychology at Istanbul University. During her master’s education, she worked with children with mental retardation, autism, attention deficit and hyperactivity at the Child Science Special Education Center for two years. On the one hand, while continuing her business life, on the other hand as a part of her master education she participated in psychiatric interviews with adolescents at Istanbul Çapa Medical Faculty and administered the Rorschach Personality Test to the patients. At the same time, she attended the sessions of adult patients in the social psychiatry department and conducted observation studies on antisocial relationships and borderline personality disorders. In her master’s thesis, she worked on the concept of addiction in interpersonal relations and conducted the reliability study necessary for adapting the Rorschach Oral Addiction Scale abroad to Turkish people.

After the special education center, she started working at Doğa College because of her desire to examine the development processes of children more closely and also because it provided a suitable area for adolescent and adult studies. She worked with children and adolescents for two years and provided counseling services to their families. In this process, for parents she organized informative seminars and parent workshops where practice and exercises were at the forefront in order to raise awareness. Afterwards, she decided to work in the hospital in order to serve in the field of clinical psychology with a focus on adolescents and adults. While continuing her job at the Austrian Sen Jorj Hospital, she also established her own counseling center ‘Nadas Psychological Counseling Center’. In addition to providing therapy support during this period, she made presentations and prepared informative articles on parent-child relationships, adolescence and adulthood problems in many television channels and magazines.

As well as modern psychology techniques she had also interest in traditional healing methods and mindfulness techniques that led her to receive training on these subjects, in 2014, she completed a certificate program on traditional yoga, breathing and meditation methods by staying at a school in India for two months. In addition, in 2022, she participated in the trainings of Psychologist Kamini Desai, one of the pioneers of Yoga Therapy, and deepened her knowledge in this field. In her work, she also applies psychotherapeutic yoga techniques in the psychological support processes of her clients.

In 2017, within the scope of Erasmus Entrepreneurship Program, she prepared a project in Greece on the contribution of the use of psychology and mindfulness techniques to stress management and anger control. In the following period, she stayed in Athens and continued to carry out therapy studies in Greece as a licensed psychologist with the approval of the Greek Ministry of Health. At the same time, she continues to support her clients both in Turkey and in other countries of the world with online therapies. 

In recent years, she has received another licence as practitioner EMDR therapist after European accredited training which she got from Emre Konuk who is the pioneer of EMDR therapy in Turkey. So in addition to psychodynamic and mindfulness therapies she has started to use in her sessions also EMDR therapy technique which has been accepted as the most effective method in traumas in a short time.

Each individual is unique and the most effective therapy method can vary from person to person. So as well as psychodynamic, yoga therapy, mindfulness and EMDR therapies, she decided to add her toolbox also solution-focused therapy and cognitive behavioral techniques, so she was trained also about these techniques and aimed to provide the widest range of support services to her clients.

By sharing all the knowledge and experiences she has gained about human psychology since 2002 with her clients, her main goal is to enable individuals to express themselves comfortably in a trusting relationship in the therapy room, to reach their potential and cope with their problems, and to provide a higher quality of life.

Her main areas of works in adults and adolescents are post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety disorders, panic attacks, anger control problems, inability to cope with stress, psychosomatic diseases, relationship and attachment problems, fear of being cheated on, problems with self-confidence and feeling worthless, phobias, parent-adolescent conflicts, exam anxiety, anxiety and fears related to covid virus, mobbing, burnout syndrome and adaptation problems resulting from immigration.
