What is Emdr Therapy?

To understand EMDR therapy, let’s first take a look at how our brain works and how psychological problems occur.

The brain processes every new information that comes to it. This information comes to us through cognitive, sensory, emotional and somatic channels. As a result of this information processing, memories and memory are formed. Our learning is formed from the combination of our memory networks. And we live life according to these learned patterns. Just like a child who is beaten by his father is afraid of authority figures in his adult life with a learned belief that an authority figure is dangerous… 

We are in a state of learning every second, the information processing of the brain never stops. However, when you remember what you ate yesterday, there is no disturbing reaction from any of these channels but when you remember the moment you learned that your lover was cheating on you, you realize that there are negative reactions in one or more of these channels. 

In other words, we can divide our memories into two as processed memories that do not disturb us in general, and unprocessed memories that disturb us and whose negative effects are reflected in your current day despite the fact that they happened in the past.

But in summary, we can say that the unprocessed memories, that is, the memories that form the basis of our problems, are the memories that are formed as a result of the disruption of the harmonious functioning of the right and left hemisphere of brain at the time we experience that traumatic event, and that cannot be processed by our brain.

This is where EMDR comes into play. With the special techniques it uses, it works the two hemispheres of the brain equally, making the unprocessed memories processed during the therapy and neutralizing the negative emotions, thoughts, sensations and body feelings developed against those memories.

How does it do this? While working on the negative memory, by making eye movements or tappings at a certain speed and number that will activate the right and left hemispheres of the brain. After therapy, you still remember the moment when you learned that your lover was cheating on you, but this is no longer a factor that negatively affects your current relationships or causes you to experience fear about the future.
